Meeting held in Bangkok, September 2019
ChangeSchool education lead was invited by the UN to be part of a team of 9 experts to advise the UN Special Rapporteur on education minority rights for South Asia.
The UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues Fernand De Varennes called for a regional forum in Bangkok Thailand to provide insights for the development of a set of regional guidelines and concrete recommendations focusing on education in, and teaching of, minority languages, which would be ratified by the UN as policy.
Professor Marie Lall was invited as one of the 9 experts and served on the Human Rights and minority language education working group. Over 2 days 9 experts and a group of minority representatives met in three working groups covering Human Rights and minority language education, public policy objectives and practice in minority languages and effective practices in education and teaching of minority languages to draft recommendations for the work of the United Nations Forum on Minority Issues.
Discussions at the forum will also inform the recommendations of the 12th session of the UN Forum on minority issues in November 2019.
